Third Day Sunrise Concert reviews
Rock of (Old) Ages
Highlights for us were a spot on version of "Ain't That a Shame" and a raucous "Dream Police." My wife and I are in our mid 50s and we decided to check out a couple of artists who have been performing almost as long as we've been alive. Cheap Trick was a fine opening act, and their best known songs were faithful to the original live or studio versions. Wonderful way to get the crowd warmed up for Third Day. Overall, both acts delivered fine performances worthy of bands 20 years younger.
We were particularly impressed by the musicians (guitar and sax) and Rod really seemed happy to feature them during many of the songs. He seemed to warm up a few songs in, and really captivated the audience throughout the rest of the show. Some of the highlights were the cover songs Rod and/or his female backup singers performed, including "Call Me," "Hot Stuff," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain," and "Addicted to Love." I always enjoy a "rock star" giving lesser known artists the spotlight during performances, so that was appreciated.
About 2/3 of the way through the evening, Rod slowed things down for an acoustic set of about 5 songs and that was a real highlight. The backup singers were gorgeous and very talented with some of the playing fiddle, violin and mandolin. At their respective ages, they won't be doing this much longer, so see them now before it's too late. For a gentleman in his late 70s, he was surprisingly nimble and his voice, although frail at times, was strong when it needed to be, and he was a wonderful showman. We thought Stewart started off a little slow and his voice seemed a little weak.
He finished things off with some up tempo numbers, including "Stay With Me" and "Hot Legs" and he kicked a few soccer (football) balls into the crowd for a few minutes during this time. Overall, the show exceeded our expectations, and we would recommend this to anyone who appreciates either of these two artists.
